"Crazy day" at Corona Open J-Bay

It has been a crazy day at the Corona Open J-Bay.

Those were the words of surfing media guru, Paul Botha, in trying to describe a day which began early Wednesday morning with an inflatable boat almost capsizing at the back of a huge 10 foot set.

It was later topped by a massive shark filmed swimming "right through Supertubes", the second shark sighting in two days at the World Surf League event

"We were in the middle of the quarter finals and this shark swam right through the centre of Supertubes.  So, the jetskis were out and the surfers on to the boat," he said.

Botha said the great white shark, estimated to be eight to ten foot, disappeared off toward "Boneyards" a distance away "so the surfers were able to get back in the water again."

The shark incident occurred during a heat involving Australian surfer Mick Fanning who had a really close brush with a massive shark during the event in 2015.

Botha said at the end of everything Gabriel Medina made it through to the semi-final after beating Fanning, while in the second quarter final there was a big upset when reigning world champion John John Florence of Hawaii was beaten by Federica Morais who got a ten point ride in the last five minutes of the heat.

"With a great forecast for tomorrow, the competition is set for an amazing finish on Thursday morning.
