Comrades Marathon and its operations manager part ways

Ann Ashworth has been let go as race and operations manager by the Comrades Marathon Association.

Taking to social media platform Instagram on Wednesday evening, Ashworth confirmed the news, saying the association’s decision came as no surprise.

“The board feels that I lack the necessary leadership and race management abilities to fulfill her duties of the past eight months,” she wrote.

"Given the recent events, this decision has not come as a surprise. For weeks now there have been rumblings among the naysayers that the board would be dealing with me."

She continued: “Regardless, and in spite of all my sacrifices and the dedication I have shown to the race for yet another year, I have once again been humbled.

“I have taken myself to the brink and worked myself to the bone and I have no medal to show for it.

“That's life.

“Thankfully, no experience is ever wasted and I look forward to what life has to offer in the next chapter.”

The CMA last week said it would also be investigating allegations of cheating during this year's event.

In her statement, Ashworth said the association is aware of a problem which occurred at the first timing point – approximately 5km – and assured athletes that the absence of a timing reading at that particular point is not necessarily indicative of course cutting.

CMA chairperson Mqondisi Ngcobo said Asworth's departure had nothing to do with recent events.

He said the CMA had entered into a contractual agreement with Ashworth which expires on 30 June and also thanked Ashworth for her contribution.

"As a result and accordingly, the CMA has appointed Alain Dalais as the acting race and operations manager until the position is filled on a permanent basis," says Ngcobo.
