PORT ELIZABETH, February 7 (ANA) – Chippa United scored in the 11th minute after regulation time had ended to beat Baroka FC 2-1 in their Premiership match at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Tuesday evening.
With the sides cancelling each other out with first-half strikes, it was the hosts that used every moment of additional time to their advantage as Rhulani Manzini wrestled a goal from a free kick.
With the three points, Chippa rise to 19 points from 15 games, and move up three positions on the log to eighth in a perfect start to their league campaign in 2017.
Baroka, meanwhile, stay rooted to the bottom of the table with 12 points from 16 matches.
In the first half, it would be the visitors who struck first. Maboke Matlakala was on hand for Baroka to bury a shot from inside the area.
Baroka FC would see their lead stay intact approaching the break, that was at least until Thamsanqa Sangweni intervened for Chippa.
The midfielder on loan to Chippa from Sundowns, converted a sharp chance with the assist coming in from Thabang Thopola.
The second period would remain goalless though there were chances for both sides, but ultimately it would be Manzini for Chippa who would have the final say in the encounter as the hosts grabbed the win as many in the crowd had begun to file out when a draw seemed certain. – African News Agency (ANA)
