The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) announced on Thursday that Le Clos and Phumelela Mbande will be Team SA’s two flag bearers at the July 23rd Tokyo Olympic Games opening ceremony.

Japan is expected to put on an impressive display for the event which begins at 13h00 South African time and will mark the official start of the global sporting competition.

All eyes will be on the final torchbearer, the identity of which is always one of the Games’ most closely guarded secrets. While millions will watch the Olympic flame being carried for the final few steps to ignite the cauldron, the stadium itself will be nearly empty. Only around 950 people, mostly officials and journalists, will be watching from the stands.

Japan has been widely criticized for hosting the games in the midst of the pandemic. Data collected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) indicates that as of 23 July, a total of 100 Covid cases had been recorded since 1 July linked to the Olympics.
