The Springboks trounced New Zealand 35-7 in a dominant world cup warm up match at Twickenham that was anything but friendly, replete with yellow and red cards.
The Springboks piled on the pressure onto the old foe from the opening whistle but took a while before getting the breakthrough with the first try from captain Siya Kolisi in the 18th minute.
At that stage New Zealand had earned their first yellow card, with Scott Barrett sent to the sin bin. He would be sent off before the break after a dangerous tackle on Malcolm Marx when he got a second yellow card which is an automatic red card.
New Zealand captain Sam Cane also spent 10 minutes in the sin bin in the first half before the Springboks went into the break with a 14-nil lead, after a Kurt-Lee Arendse intercept got the Boks their second try and Arendse’s 11th try in 10 test matches.
South Africa’s other tries came from Malcolm Mark who got his 17th test try, Kwagga Smith and Bongi Mbonambi. Manie Libbok had his kicking boots on slotting all five conversions.
Pieter-Steph du Toit also spent 10 minutes in the sin bin.
New Zealand got their first points in the 70th minute through a try by Cam Roigard, which was converted by Richie Mo’unga.
Man of the Man, Damian Willemse, described the Boks record win over the All Blacks as a great performance by the team.
“We were just building from that game in Auckland (which the Boks lost) and it's just a great win for us as we move to the World Cup,” he said.
Catain, Siya Kolisi, who lifted the Qatar Airways Cup, had a big smile on his face as a packed Twickenham roared him on, said he is honoured to be back.
He also said it was great to see so many beautiful South Africans at Twickenham.
“It reminded us why we do this. Wherever we play in the world you always turn up,” Kolisi said.
Turning to the game, he said they knew what happened the last time we played them, but we said we want to give it everything. “We didn’t want to die wondering,” he said.
But, Kolisi said; “the hard work starts now, we have to go and defend our title.”
