Port Elizabeth marathon man Richard Geyer has raised just over 100-thousand rand for the Cansa Association of South Africa through his phenomenal effort on the road last month.
In the lead-up to the Comrades Marathon, Geyer ran 1000 kilometres from Port Elizabeth to Durban in just ten days. He then rounded off his Bob1000 fundraising initiative by running the Comrades Marathon up-run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.
All the proceeds were donated to CANSA Port Elizabeth and at a hand-over ceremony on Tuesday afternoon, the Association was presented with a cheque for R107 450.
Geyer said the essence of this feat was to take a stance with those fighting Cancer and that he had to keep fighting until the end - all the way through to the finish at the Comrades Marathon.
"It is amazing what this young man achieved in 10 days," said CANSA's, Marius de Vries. "He has motivated many to keep fighting and to push through, to overcome any obstacle they may face."
Team organiser Lesley Domingo said the success of BOB1000, the money raised in support of the fight against cancer, and the recognition it received was all thanks to the sponsors and supporters. "We are still in awe at the reach and momentum the BOB1000 initiative gained," said Domingo.
