CAPE TOWN, December 3 (ANA) – South Africa’s Blitzbokke made a glorious start to the 2016-17 HSBC Sevens World Series season with a well-taken 26-14 win over the defending champions Fiji in Dubai on Saturday afternoon after leading 14-7 at halftime.
South Africa scored tries through Cecil Afrika, Branco du Preez, Chris Dry and Seabelo Senatla. Du Preez managed three conversions.
Fiji’s points came via tries from Jerry Tuwai and Osea Kolinisau, who converted both tries.
Workhorse Chris Dry was named ‘Player of the Final’ for his exceptional work rate from start to finish. He was also the top tackler this weekend at the Dubai Sevens.
Senatla was named ‘Player of the Tournament’ after he scored a glut of tries – 11 in all, over the two-day event.
The Blitzbokke have moved to the top of the standings with 22 points, followed by Fiji with 19.
The World Series moves on to Cape Town where the action continues at Cape Town next weekend. – African News Agency (ANA)
