Blackburn Rovers were relegated from the English Premier League last night after a 1-0 defeat at home to Wigan Athletic ended their 11-year stay in the top flight.
Rovers had to win to have a chance of keeping their survival bid going to Sunday's final day of the season, when they travel to Chelsea.
But it was north-west rivals Wigan who ensured their Premier League survival when Antolin Alcaraz headed in the only goal of the game three minutes from time.
Meanwhile: Struggling Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs have named former BafanaBafana minder Stuart Baxter as the club's new head coach.
Baxter replaces Serb Vladimir Vermezovic who was sacked last month after a string of poor results.
The Amakhosi are sixth in the league standings and are out of the title race with two games left in the season.
