Banyana Banyana are through to the last 16 of the Fifa Women's World Cup after beating Italy 3-2 for their first-ever world cup win.
The South Africans were locked 1-1 with the Italians at the half-time break in Wellington in New Zealand, which co-hosted the 2023 showpiece with Australia.
Banyana Banyana's victory sees Italy exiting the tournament after reaching the quarter-finals four years ago.
The South Africans leapfrogged their more fancied opponents finishing in Group G in second place behind Sweden who won all three of their group matches.
Banyana Banyana were the 12th team to qualify for the knock-out stages.
Speaking post-match on Supersport, striker, Thembi Kgatlana, was emotional, saying that over the past three weeks, she had lost three family members but chose to stay on at the World Cup tournament.
"We got a lot of criticism, but it's football you know. It's who wants it the best. I come back from a brutal injury and for me to be here and play for the country, to make history with the girls for South Africa, everyone deserves it," she said.
Kgatlana said it was a team effort, after having "messed up" the two other games, losing 2-1 to Sweden and drawing the match against Argentina 2-2- after taking an early lead in the early group matches.
"We had to dig deep. The girls are happy and I'm very happy," she said.
