British teen Laura Robson ended the singles career of three-time US Open champion Kim Clijsters with an emotional 7-6 7-6 victory in the second round - Clijsters had always said she'd be retiring for good after this years event.
Top seed Victoria Azarenka, defending champion Samantha Stosur and 3rd seed Maria Sharapova all won comfortable second round matches.
