Kevin Anderson lost his first round match yesterday, 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 to fourth seeded Spaniard David Ferrer, less than 24 hours after Channele Scheepers was sent packing by Russian Maria Kirilenko.
British 3rd seed Andy Murray became the first player to reach the third round - he won his second round matchup against Ivan Dodig of Croatia 6-2, 6-1, 6-3
British teen Laura Robson ended the singles career of three-time US Open champion Kim Clijsters with an emotional 7-6 7-6 victory in the second round - Clijsters had always said she'd be retiring for good after this years event.
Top seed Victoria Azarenka, defending champion Samantha Stosur and 3rd seed Maria Sharapova all won comfortable second round matches.
