The Blue Bulls made a strong start at the National Under-18 Academy Rugby Week in Wellington yesterday but South Western District Eagles made the biggest splash by beating the more fancied KZN.
The Blue Bulls beat Eastern Province 22-8 with a strong second half showing after the score was deadlocked 3-all at half time.
The SWD Eagles beat KZN 34-19.
Free State broke local hearts by beating the hosts Boland 28-15.
And: Western Province fullback Tiaan Swanepoel scored 16 points, including a penalty at the death, to give his side a nailbiting 21-19 victory over the Lions in the main match on the opening day of the Under-16 Grant Khomo Rugby Week hosted by University of Johannesburg.
In the main curtain-raiser, Limpopo beat Griquas 54-10.
Griquas Country Districts beat Border Country Districts 25-22 and Boland beat Border 23-15.
Luigy van Jaarsveld scored two tries as Eastern Province edged SWD 24-18.
