PREMIER GAMES LAUNCH
The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts & Culture through its Directorate Sport Development currently is busy preparing the launch of Premier Games. The launch is scheduled to take place in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality – Port Elizabeth from the 29 November to 02 December 2012. Four codes of sport have been identified to form part of the launch,
• Rugby Sevens – Males and Females
• Football- Females
• Boxing – Males
• Netball (U/ 19)- Females
The DSRAC since inception has been running various tournaments – multi- coded and single coded as an attempt with the primary aim of identifying talent, nurture and channel to the national federations but also with the secondary aim of contributing to provincial unity. On the other hand municipalities in the province started Mayoral Cups programme catering for various sport codes. The common principle for all the municipalities was to use sport as part of community development in particular youth.
In the process SALGA also started to see value in sport in terms of integrating our communities and as a result started to stage SALGA Games in 2010. The programme catered for youth, municipality officials and councillors. In the Eastern Cape Sport Summit held on the
14-16 February 2011 it was resolved that the Mayoral Cups be embraced and supported by DSRAC, federations and Sport Council. The above was further strengthened by the resolution of the Executive Council Lekgotla held on the 23-24 August 2011.
From grass The ‘Theme’ root to glory through sport
The purpose is to create more opportunities for our youth to show case their talent for nurturing into excellence. The target group is youth ( Males & Females) below the age 20 participating in the identified codes including disability sport disciplines.
The reasoning behind the Launch being taken to Port Ellizabeth is to create hype during the 50 days countdown of the 2013 Orange AFCON scheduled for 30 November 2012.11.23
All Districts will be sending teams. A football provincial squad will be selected during the games in preparation for the Lower Saxony Football team that will be visiting the province during Easter Weekend – 2013. The different venues will be used for the games.
