Playing golf for a Bright Future

Proceeds from the annual Algoa Cares East London Charity Golf Day will support the work of a foundation which educates young girls aged between 12 and 16 years.

“Out of the 44 applications we received the Siyakholwa Development Foundation based in Keiskammahoek stood out,” says Jennilee Peremore, public relations and corporate social investment manager at Algoa FM.

“To that I must add that the quality of the applications we received was exceptional. It is truly heartening to see the good work that is being done by non-governmental agencies and charities in the Border area,” she adds.

Funds raised by the Algoa Cares Charity Golf Day will support the Siyakholwa Development Foundation who have adopted the “Bright Future Programme” with the aim to implement it in rural schools within the Eastern Cape.  The programme addresses a lack of knowledge by girls from the ages of 12-16 years about puberty, intimate relationships, teenage pregnancy, HIV/Aids and finding employment after school.

Their lack of knowledge regarding these issues results in an increased number of school drop-outs, according to Greg Eland, Training and Fundraising Manager of the Siyakholwa Development Foundation.

It is supporting girls in 15 schools in the rural areas.

Funds raised at the golf day will go towards providing transport and module guides for the programme, “with the aim for these students to pay forward their new-found knowledge by educating and empowering future generations,” says Peremore.

Listeners will be able to find out more about the work of the foundation by tuning in to Algoa Cares at lunch time on Monday, 27 July.

The Algoa Cares Charity Golf Day will take place at the East London Golf Club on Friday, 4 September.

This year’s theme is “Your Twist on Spring” – tying in with National Casual Day, and also the first weekend of Spring.

“We look forward to having a rainbow of colour on the course to fit in with the fun-filled day, with the sponsors using the spring theme to decorate their areas,” says Peremore.
