Perfect weather expected for Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer

There will be perfect conditions for the 20th annual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer, which will transform the Port Elizabeth beach-front into a sea of pink tomorrow.

According to the weather prophets, it will be a relatively cool and overcast morning, with a light easterly breeze.

Among those getting up early for the walk will be the Isuzu Southern Kings players, fresh from their Friday Guinness PRO14 Round 7 fixture against the Scarlets at the Madibaz Stadium.

Tomorrow’s crowd, which is also scheduled include members of the Executive Council of the Eastern Cape, will be entertained and led by a troupe of African drummers.

Leading the pack will be the Kings players.

“We as the Isuzu Southern Kings are pleased to be part of this great initiative which marries well with our own #KingsCare campaign. As the Isuzu Southern Kings, we support the fight against cancer and we are happy to be part of a campaign that raises awareness about cancer.

“We encourage the public to support this wonderful initiative and also our important Guinness PRO14 match,” says Isuzu Southern Kings Chief Operations Officer, Charl Crous.

The annual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer is supported by the Eastern Cape departments of health, and of sport, recreation, art and culture.

“Once again we will share in the experience of a wave of pink flowing along the beach-front, with at least seven thousand participants wearing their 2018 pink T-shirts,” says Algoa FM managing director Dave Tiltmann.

Funds raised by the 2018 Big Walk will go towards the purchase of a “FotoFinder” Mole analyser. In 2017 the event raised R570 000.

As part of the run-up to the event, the Eastern Cape department of health hosted a number of testing and information days at centres around the province. In 2017 over 900 people were tested through this outreach. There will also be free screening on the day of the event.

Participants will be able to personalise their support for those affected by cancer, by writing on their walk numbers who it is they are walking for as one. They can also sign on two Isuzu MU-X Adventure SUVs, which will be parked under the arch in the Second Avenue entrance to Sun Boardwalk.

The walk starts at 8am on Saturday 27 October.

Entry forms are available from the Lighthouses at The Boardwalk from one till seven this afternoon and from 6.30 tomorrow.
