Today Port Elizabeth put on their walking shoes and came together for the 2012 Discovery Algoa FM Big Walk. Participants joined Discovery staff members and the Algoa FM team in embracing the challenge to be more active, make the decision to live healthier lifestyles and create awareness for the fight against cancer whilst raising the much needed funds for the PE branch of CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa).
The walk was once again a phenomenal success seeing families, neighbours and friends join in their numbers with great excitement and determination. This year’s event saw almost 6000 people complete the 8km and 4km routes, a 25% increase in entries from last year which is a great achievement.
Special guests included General Manager of the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World, Clifford Ngakane and professional comedian, Gino Fabbri, both of whom have lost loved ones to cancer. Other celebrities included singing sensations, Lloyd Cele and Patrick Lindoor.
An invigorating vibe filled the air with Algoa FM broadcasting from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) field, live music performances and a variety of other healthy and fun activities facilitated by the Discovery and Algoa FM teams.
“It can be a challenge to interrupt one’s weekend and ask those who would normally be relaxing at home to wake up early and go outdoors to exercise. This however, is one of Discovery’s goals, to encourage individuals to be more physically active and aware of their health. In this way one’s health risks are better managed and, diagnosis can then occur in time and ultimately one’s quality of life improved. Cancer for instance, affects us all, however it can be overcome by being more informed and aware and platforms such as this walk are a great way for us to communicate that message to our communities,” adds Jody Foster, Head of Sponsorships at Discovery.
“Port Elizabeth has once again shown us why they are called the friendly city, because no matter whether it is storming outside, you can always count on them to go the extra mile for their fellow human being. It was cold on the route today, but nevertheless thousands of people gathered to walk in support of the little ones from the CHOC Foundation. It just shows how close this walk is to the hearts of many Port Elizabeth residents and we are very proud that we, together with our partner, Discovery, can present our listeners with such a positive event,” concludes Dave Tiltmann, Managing Director of Algoa FM.
