Future Radio Presenter gets a Kick Start to her Career

Noluvuyo Nkodo, a grade 12 learner from Masiphathifane Secondary School in Motherwell, was given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-present the popular Algoa FM Morning Show from six to nine on Algoa FM with Daron Mann, Carol-Ann Kelleher and Charlton Tobias.

“I did the traffic updates on the Morning Show. It was a lot easier than I expected and lots of fun," says Nkodo.

She was one of three winners of a competition run by the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) to show learners how they can live their dreams.

Career choices were posted onto a “dream wall” by 1 000 learners during a NMMU Open Day in May this year.

On Tuesday, 3 July 2012 Noluvuyo was surprised by Tobias, when he and a camera crew went to her home in Kamvihle, Motherwell to tell her that she had been selected to live her dream job, and granted a R5 000 NMMU bursary.

“I was very nervous when Charlton pitched at my house with the camera crew, but it was awesome,” says Nkodo. She co-hosted the show on Thursday, July 5.

“We love initiatives like this where giving back does not only present a short term solution, but a long term one and we are delighted that we could use our platform to help make Noluvuyo’s dream a reality,” says Dave Tiltmann, Managing Director at Algoa FM.

The project was managed by NMMU advertising agency Boomtown. “We kept the idea simple, but effective, using the target market to deliver the message to the target market”, says Jared Louw, Business Manager at Boomtown.

“With NMMU being the leading educational institution in the Eastern Cape, it is important that they find creative ways to involve and educate our learners so that they start thinking and planning for their future while still at school,” says Tiltmann.

In addition to study choices, students are informed about the financing options available to them during the open days. Financial assistance is available to full-time students who register with the institution in the form of bursaries, merit awards, scholarships and study loans.

Assistance is based on financial need as well as academic excellence and sporting achievements. These awards will not necessarily cover all costs, and cannot be granted to all candidates who apply.

NMMU also provides financial assistance in collaboration with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) for financially needy students. More detailed information can be obtained from the Student Financial Aid Office at NMMU.
