East London’s The Haven Wellness Care Centre will have new kitchen equipment, an alarm system and fence ahead of Christmas thanks to the generosity of golfers who participated in the annual Algoa Cares Winter Charity Golf Day held in August.
“We were delighted to be able to hand over a cheque for R75 000, says Algoa FM’s public relations and corporate social investment manager Jennilee Peremore.
The money was donated to the centre yesterday at the start of the annual international 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign.
“The Haven Wellness Centre observed the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign and World AIDS Day in partnership with members of the Department of Social Development, the South African Police, Ministers Fraternal, Churches and local organisations in a joint campaign to raise awareness and root out the scourge of abuse against women and children and in the fight against HIV and AIDS,” says Haven director Eurina Stowman.
The care centre was selected earlier in the year as the 2014 beneficiary of the station’s “Shanghai Showdown” themed charity golf day.
The Haven caters for terminally ill adults and underprivileged children; children who have been sexually assaulted and children who have been left orphaned due to parents passing away from illnesses.
Funds raised by the Algoa Cares Winter Charity Golf Day will be used to help finance the purchase of new kitchen equipment, and to fix fencing to secure the premises.
The Haven’s alarm system was damaged and their kitchen appliances stolen earlier this year during a break-in. ADT have already upgraded their alarm system at no cost to the Haven.
“The objective is to have all the equipment installed in time for The Haven’s Christmas party. We thank all the participants in the charity golf day who opened their hearts and wallets to help make a real difference in the lives of the people being cared for by the Haven,” says Peremore.
