East London’s The Haven Wellness Centre has been selected as the 2014 beneficiary of the Algoa Cares Winter Charity Golf Day. This year’s theme is “Shanghai Showdown”.
This annual event will be taking place on the East London golf clubs famed Colonel SV Hotchkin greens and is the highlight on the Border golfing calendar.
“The Algoa Cares Winter Charity Golf Day is both organised and hosted by Algoa FM in support of our community”, says PR and CSI Manager of Algoa FM, Jennilee Peremore. The charity golf day is an opportunity for organisations to support needy causes while making contacts and building relationships that drive business.
The Haven is situated in Parkridge (East London) and caters for people who are terminally ill especially those affected by HIV/Aids, TB and other chronic illnesses. In addition to this they have an Educare Centre that forms part of their OVC (Orphaned and Vulnerable Children) programme that caters for 60 children aged from 3-6 years and almost 300 children as part of the Feeding Scheme Programme who are infected or affected by HIV/Aids, single parents or parents that are unemployed and/or young children that have been sexually and/or emotionally abused.
“We experienced three break-ins within a matter of weeks, a few months ago, and most of our kitchen appliances and all items of foods were stolen. Our insurance was not able to reimburse everything. This has put a lot of strain on the staff who now need to prepare food for the children and adults in a kitchen with the bare minimum of equipment. We provide the children at the Educare Centre with 3 meals a day and the Feeding Scheme programme offers at least 3 meals per week. Some of these children don’t even have as little as one wholesome meal a day”, says Finance and Fundraising Co-ordinator of the Haven Wellness Centre, Caroll Warmberg.
“With the proceeds from this golf day we will fund their OVC programme by upgrading the charity’s alarm system, fix the fencing and replace some pertinent kitchen appliances used for their feeding scheme and for the meals prepared for the children from their Educare Centre”, says Peremore.
The golf day takes place on Friday, August 15. The cost is R2500.00 per four-ball.
