Early Christmas for ACVV Kamvalethu children

Port Elizabeth golfers have given the children of the ACVV Kamvalethu home an early Christmas present.

The R60 000 raised by the annual Algoa Cares Charity Golf Day was handed over to the home on Monday, October 5.

A group of 17 children from the home and their social worker were taken to the Algoa FM studios to mark the hand-over.

They were treated to a tour of the studio , a game of tenpin bowling with the Algoa FM team and then a meal at Spur.

Funds raised by the golf day will be used for maintenance and repairs to the Kamvalethu building, according to Algoa FM public relations and corporate social investment manager Jennilee Peremore.

The ACVV Kamvalethu “drop-in” centre in Korsten runs daily programmes with up to 50 children from the community.

The centre’s after school programme includes help with homework and projects.

Numbers go up during school holidays.

Street children are also cared for and are given meals and clothes as well as the opportunity to learn.

It is hoped that some of the upgrades will be completed in time for the Christmas break, according to Peremore.

Adult Basic Education classes are presented at the centre three mornings a week.
