Companies and Schools Win Big with the Discovery Algoa FM Big Walk


Alexander Road High School and Charlo Primary have the most entries in the Discovery Algoa FM Big Walk thus far and will therefore be visited by Algoa FM’s Daron Mann Breakfast team (DMB) on 10 and 11 October. The company leading thus far is the PE branch of ADT Security and will be interviewed on the DMB show on 10 October. These are the schools and company with the most entries as per Friday, 20 September.

The competition only closes on 16 October, so other schools and corporates still have the opportunity to win.

“We have a high school, primary school and corporate category in the competition. In total there is R40 000 of Algoa FM airtime and R6000 in cash to be won. The final winners will be announced on the day of the Discovery Algoa FM Big Walk on Saturday, 26 October. We have a special entry fee of only R10 for learners to enter the Big Walk”, says marketing manager of Algoa FM, Toinette Koumpan.

The Childhood Cancer Foundation (CHOC) was announced as the 2013 beneficiary at the launch of the CHOC lodge at Dora Nginza Hospital in August. The funds received from last year’s walk helped with the establishment of the building that can accommodate 27 mothers while their children undergo cancer treatment.

“This year we aim to help CHOC maintain this building which is estimated to cost half a million rand per annum”, says Algoa FM managing director Dave Tiltmann.

Entries are now open for the event which starts at eight in the morning on Saturday, October 26 from the NMMU Cricket Fields in Second Avenue, Summerstrand.

“According to the Discovery Vitality Fittest City Index, Nelson Mandela Bay ranked second among six metropolitan areas in physical activity-related health and infrastructure that promotes physical activity. This is an indication that the residents of Nelson Mandela Bay understand the importance of living active lifestyles and using public facilities for better health. We encourage schools and the public in the area to continue leading active lifestyles by putting on their walking shoes for the Discovery Algoa FM Big Walk.” says Jody Foster Discovery Head of Sponsorships.
The event consists of 4km and 8km walks.

The general entry fee for both the 8km and 4km walks is only R35 for adults.
All children under the age of 10 pay R10, and toddlers in prams enter the race for free.

All children under 10 and scholars entering the school competition who would like to receive a goodie bag and T-shirt will need to pay the full adult rate for the walk.

Medals will be awarded to the first 7 500 walkers to complete the event. Goodie bags will be awarded to the first 7 000 participants and T-shirts to the first 6 000 participants to register for the event.

Entries opened on Monday, 2 September and are available from Sportsman’s Warehouse, Brian Bands, Action Sports, Sports World, the Footballer and Brookets Sports as well as the Algoa FM office in Summerstrand. The entry from can be both collected and paid at the sport stores. Entry forms however can only be collected from Algoa FM and the Virgin Active gyms.

Schools who want to enter the school competition should download the special school entry form from the Algoa FM website or contact the organiser to arrange for entry forms to be delivered to the school.
