Over 140 disadvantaged children in Chintsa have had a good start to the 2020 school year thanks to East London businesses and golfers.
African Angels Independent School, the beneficiary of the 2019 Algoa FM Charity golf day which took place in East London, received a total of R62 000 to spend on books, a laptop and fund the tiling of their girls’ hostel.
Lou Billet of African Angels Independent School says: “the money raised during the 2019 Algoa FM Golf Day enabled us to do tiling in the girls’ hostel - improving the hostel conditions for our girls who live at the school from Monday to Friday during school terms.
Three quarters of our girls do not have toilets at their homes and there are no public toilets in their community.
Being able to provide hygienic, safe and homely hostel accommodation gives our girls space to learn and reach their full potential.
“We were also able to use a parent from the school to do the tiling work and so an investment was made back into our beneficiary community.
“We were able to purchase quality textbooks with the proceeds of the Algoa FM Golf Day supporting our mission to provide a quality education to some of the most disadvantaged learners in the country.
“It is not acceptable that learners who are financially disadvantaged, are not provided with quality learning materials and we are grateful to be able to support excellent teaching with great learning materials.
“A school needs great leadership with the right tools to be effective in their role. Top this end, we were able to purchase a lap top computer for our Administration Head to support her day to day work.
Managing Director of Algoa FM, Alfie Jay says “we are always delighted when we can make such a difference in the community.
“It takes many hands coming together to destroy poverty, and we must do it one step at a time.
“Thank you to all the businesses and the golfers who continue to support our golf day. This wouldn’t be possible without you”, says Jay.
