Algoa FM DJs will be taking to the streets on the first day of school in order to support those who do not have the funds for essentials such as books, pens, rulers and satchels.
“Everyone in the Eastern Cape wants to see us move up from being at the bottom of the class when it comes to the matric pass rate,” says Algoa FM managing director Dave Tiltmann.
The province’s matric pass rate of 64.9% for 2013 was the lowest in the country.
“While the pass rate is better, the needs of poor pupils are just as big in the Southern Cape, which is the reason we have included the region in our annual back to school drive.
“Our DJs have joined forces with two of the province’s top charity organisations in order to help the less privileged pupils make a better start to the 2014 school year,” he says.
All donations will be distributed through the Community Chest in the Eastern Cape and Eden Lions on the Garden Route.
The DJs will be at busy intersections in Port Elizabeth, East London and George on January 15 to collect donations from the public.
In Port Elizabeth, Wayne Hart and Lauren Mungur will be at the Stanford Road and Aubrey Street intersection with the Algoa FM Vibe Mobile; husband and wife team Mio Khondleka and Queenie Grootboom will be at the Main Road and 14th Avenue intersection in Walmer; and Kaycee Rossouw and Tové Kane will be at the Five Ways and Cape Road intersection.
In East London, Gordon Graham will be at the Chamberlain Street and Devereux Avenue intersection.
On the Garden Route, the Algoa FM team will be assisted by the Eden Lions at the Laing Street four-way stop outside the George South Primary School.
Alternatively, supporters of this cause can drop off their donations at any one of the Algoa FM studios; either at The Boardwalk in Marine Drive Summerstrand in Port Elizabeth, Hemingways Hotel and Casino, Corner of Westerns and Two Rivers Drive in East London, or at the Algoa FM office at 72 York Street in George.
