Algoa FM is expanding its management team as part of an internal restructuring in order to meet the demands of its bigger broadcast and media footprint.
Managing director Dave Tiltmann says Algoa FM is no longer just a radio station: “We have fast become a fully-fledged media business which has a trusted and ever-growing online presence; the Sport Elizabeth newspaper brand and our flagship radio station, which has just expanded into the Garden Route.”
Former programme director Alfie Jay has been appointed the station’s first operations director. Reporting to him are the managers of programming, new media and news.
A programme manager is still to be appointed. Together, the three departments are “the creative hub of the business” responsible for providing a plethora of content, says Jay.
According to Tiltmann, the restructuring will help ensure that “all our products can deliver on our promise to our listeners, readers and advertisers.”
“The restructuring demonstrates that we are serious about our business, and understand that we cannot continue operating as a radio station when we have become a full-house media business,” says Jay.
With the expansion of its broadcast footprint into the Garden Route, Algoa FM now has offices in Port Elizabeth, East London and George.
Jay will also be responsible for the East London office and Algoa FM’s corporate presence in the Border region. “We will continue to work closely with the local business chamber and other stakeholders in order to promote the region,” he says.
Jay started his career in 1990 as a production assistant for what was then Radio Algoa. In 1996, he was appointed technical manager for the newly privatised Radio Algoa and became programme manager in 2002. He was appointed to Algoa FM’s board of directors in 2008. "These are exciting times and I am looking forward to the challenges ahead," says Jay.
