Algoa FM equips Walmer High School library and awards R85 000 bursary

Masifunde Learner Development received a R65 000 donation to equip the Walmer High School library with the much needed textbooks and reference books.

In addition to the donation, Algoa FM also announced today at an assembly of 1500 learners and teachers that they are also awarding Walmer High School with an Algoa FM bursary to the value of R85 000 at Varsity College.

This bursary will be awarded to a grade 12 Walmer High School learner who successfully completes their final school year in 2014.

“We are not necessarily looking for a top academic performer. Although academic results will need to be of a high standard, we are looking for a well-rounded student; sports, extracurricular activities as well strong character traits will be taken into consideration when awarding this bursary. Grade 12 learners who are interested will need to apply”, said Managing Director of Algoa FM, Dave Tiltmann.

Masifunde runs a variety of educational programmes in Walmer Township with the goal to increase the level of education within the community. Part of the organisation’s activities is the management of the library in Walmer High School to provide the school’s learners with conducive space to study and research; ensuring that the library provides the 1400 learners from Walmer High School with up-to-date study material, new textbooks and reference books.

Masifunde Learner Development was chosen because “Education continues to be a concern in this province with the Eastern Cape once again having the lowest matric pass rate. We hope that our support of this education focused beneficiary will emphasise the importance of coming together to make a big difference in this area”, says Tiltmann.

The golfers, who participated in the Rio Carnival themed Algoa Cares Summer Charity Golf Day which took place on Thursday, March 6 at the Humewood Golf Club, have enabled Masifunde Learner Development to help the Walmer High School with new books.
