The Nkosinathi Foundation, of and for the Blind and Partially Sighted in Port Elizabeth, has been selected as the beneficiary for the 2016 Algoa Cares Charity Golf Day.
Nkosinathi is the only centre in the Eastern Cape which helps newly-blinded children and adults to meet the challenges of loss of sight and to become fully productive members of society.
“We were impressed by the array of beneficial programmes that are provided by Nkosinathi, free of charge, to people who are blind or partially sighted. These include orientation and mobility training, access to special equipment, and individual and family counseling amongst many other services provided by the small, dedicated and passionate team. In addition, they manage the only Internet Café for Blind and Partially Sighted people in the Eastern Cape.”, says PR and CSI Manager at Algoa FM.
“Their programmes are aimed at empowering people and that is certainly what we want to achieve through our Algoa Cares initiative. Training such as braille literacy, computer training using Adaptive Software, job seeking and interview skills and CV writing skills, helping around 700 people a year in the Metro and throughout the Eastern Cape”, she adds.
According to Nkosinathi Foundation director Debby Wakeford the funds raised will be used to equip Nkosinathi's early childhood development centre with specialised educational toys and tactile story books for blind children, musical instruments, tables and chairs, and “first talking computers”.
Damp patches will be repaired and the early childhood development centre will be repainted.
The Algoa Cares Charity Golf Day will be hosted at the PE Golf Club on Thursday, 28 April.
At the 2015 event R60 000 was raised for the ACVV Kamvalethu home in Korsten.
“The theme for this year links with our 30th Birthday celebrations, which is “forever young,” says Peremore.
The organiser of the golf day, Debbie Lerm, encourages golfers and corporates to get on board and support a worthy cause while having a blast with their “forever young” theme, by either purchasing a fourball or sponsoring a tee or green.
“Bring out the kid in you. Be colourful and bright. Dress your green and tee as carnival, funfair, party theme or with cartoon characters. Hand out items at your area, candy floss, jelly tots, doughnuts, popcorn, slush puppies, cup cakes, sweets, toffee apples. Games can include jumping castles, mechanical bull, hopscotch, hoola hoop, beanbag throws, spoon and egg races, and tug of war”.
Algoa FM will be giving away R20 000 worth of advertising airtime to the corporate team that goes the extra mile at the sponsored tee or green. Entries close on Friday, 15 April.
