A drop-in centre for vulnerable and orphaned children, ACVV Kamvalethu in Korsten Port Elizabeth has been selected as the beneficiary of the 2015 Algoa Cares Charity Golf Day, to be hosted at the Humewood Golf Club on May 28.
Kamvalethu was selected from 40 proposals, according to Algoa FM public relations and community social investment manager Jennilee Peremore.
“Five were shortlisted and we visited their premises. Although all the applications we received make a very important contribution to community upliftment, we always try to support projects where we can make the biggest difference and where there is the greatest need,” she says.
Kamvalethu offers basic educational classes to children in English, Maths and Biblical studies.
Every child who goes to the drop-in centre for food or clothes has to sign up to for the classes, which they must attend Monday to Wednesday from 09h30-12h00 in order to qualify for the benefits.
A number of children have been able to return to mainstream schooling, making Kamvalethu a beacon of hope for the children of Gelvandale, Schauderville, Helenvale, and Korsten as an alternative to drugs, prostitution and gangsterism, she says.
Funds raised by the charity golf day will be used to repair the building in which Kamvalethu is housed in order to ensure that a conducive learning environment is created for the children, says Peremore.
Work will include the painting of the interior and exterior of the building, making repairs and maintaining the bathrooms, the replacement of the geyser and maintenance of the centre’s washing machine.
Algoa FM will be giving away R20 000 worth of advertising airtime to the “corporate team that goes the extra mile at the sponsored tee or green,” she says. The theme to this year’s event is ‘Opposites Attract’.
