UDM set to join Government of National Unity (GNU)

Thulisile Mapongwana

United Democratic Movement (UDM) party leader Bantu Holomisa confirmed that his party has accepted the invitation to join the Government of National Unity (GNU).

In a letter sent to the ANC's Secretary General, Fikile Mbalula, Holomisa thanks the ANC for the meeting held between them on Friday.

He states that the ANC had explained their "Draft Statement of Intent of the 2024 Government of National Unity" in greater detail and that the UDM National Office Management Committee had since been briefed on the outcome.

"We note that those issues will later be discussed by all participants in the Government of National Unity (GNU).

"The agreement will subsequently be signed, and the public will be informed later on how the GNU will operate," Holomisa says in the letter.

He further says that the UDM held the pre-election view that there seemed to be an emerging consensus that there would be no outright winner of the 2024 national and provincial elections.

This outcome, according to Holomisa, should not be seen as a negative but rather as a "positive outcome of a flourishing democracy".

"The UDM is further of the view that some of the resolutions taken at the proposed National Dialogue will require legislation to effect meaningful intervention in the future of South Africa," he said.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is yet to elect his Cabinet.
