Ramaphosa re-elected as leader of ANC


Cyril Ramaphosa has been re-elected President of the ANC at the party's 55th national conference at Nasrec in Johannesburg.

It was a two-horse race against former health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize but the President took the vote quite comfortably in the end.

President Ramaphosa secured the ANC's top post for a second term with 2 476 votes to the 1 897 votes received by Dr Mkhize.

Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane was in the race for the position of ANC Deputy President but he lost out to Paul Mashatile in the end by a fairly wide margin.

Mashatile secured 2 178 votes to the 1 858 votes received by Premier Mabuyane.

The third candidate - Justice and Corrections Minister Ronald Lamola only got 315 votes.

The position of ANC Chairperson was a closely run affair and ultimately saw Gwede Mantashe re-elected to the position by the finest of margins.

Mantashe secured the position with 2 062 votes to the 2 018 votes received by Stanley Mathabatha.

There were wild scenes of excitement when Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula captured the position of ANC Secretary-General.

The First Deputy Secretary-General is Nomvula Mokonyane and the second Secretary-General is Maropene Ramokgopa.

Dr Gwen Ramokgopa is the ANC Treasurer-General.
