Opening of Parliament scheduled on Mandela Day

SAPS

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called a Joint Sitting of the National Assembly (NA) and the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) for the Opening of Parliament.

Spokesperson for the Presidency Vincent Magwenya says the President will deliver the Opening of Parliament Address on the 18th of July to outline the priorities of the 7th Administration.

He says it will coincide with the United Nations-declared Nelson Mandela International Day.

Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 and is considered the Founding President of a democratic South Africa.

Mandela Day is a global day of celebration and personal and collective actions for good that honour his life and legacy.

Magwenya says it is a fitting tribute to have the Opening of Parliament on Madiba's birthday.

"It calls on individuals and communities to reflect on Mandela's values and principles and to positively impact communities and globally," he said.

It is unclear when Ramaphosa will announce his Cabinet under the Government of National Unity (GNU), as negotiations are still underway and under wraps.
