Northern Alliance threatens to pull out of Bay coalition

The 'bloc' made up of small political parties, that form part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Coalition Government is in talks following threats by the Northern Alliance to pull out.

Northern Alliance President Gary Van Niekerk confirmed to AlgoaFM News his intentions to pull out of the current coalition but said that details behind this decision would be divulged in a press statement.

Meanwhile, another source which forms part of the coalition made up of the DA, UDM, ACDP, African Independent Congress(AIC), the PAC, FF-plus and the Abantu Integrity Movement, confirmed the NA's intentions.

The coalition was formed in July last year following lengthy talks by the political party leadership.

The Northern Alliance jumped ship from the ANC-led coalition in September, a move which subsequently led to the ANC losing power in the Bay.

If the NA should follow through with its threats then the current DA-led coalition government will be left on shaky ground with only 59 seats in Council.

Freedom Front Plus Councillor, Bill Harington says a coalition management meeting is set to take place on Tuesday morning.

Harington says the NA has not formally stepped aside yet and that there are coalition agreement structures written to address certain issues.

"We have a coalition agreement with certain structures written in to address problems from partners and we will be going that route to hear all concerned partners' issues and seek solutions," he said.
