ACDP embarks on nationwide protest to object Single Marriage Bill

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) will embark on a national protest on Friday to take a stand against Government's proposed Single Marriage Bill.

The Bill seeks to consolidate all Marriage Acts of the country including the Civil Union Act that came into effect in 2006.

Protesters in Nelson Mandela Bay are expected to gather behind Pier 14 at 10 am to make their way to the offices of the Department of Home Affairs to hand over their memorandum.

ACDP President Reverend Kenneth Meshoe says their stance is clear as the Bible defines a union as being between a man and a woman.

He says their wish is for the current legislation to remain in place in order to separate heterosexual unions from homosexual and other unions.

Meshoe said the Bill will also not exempt Christian or other religious marriage officers from conducting same-sex unions or others they may disagree with on religious grounds.

Protesters will also march to Home Affairs in the Western Cape, Mpumalanga and Gauteng.

Earlier this year the Department of Home Affairs invited members of the public to submit their written comments on the Draft Marriage Bill before the 31st of August 2023.

Draft Marriage Bill

The Marriage Bill seeks to rationalise legislations dealing with marriages and ensure that all persons, regardless of race, sex, gender, sexual orientation, religious or cultural beliefs, are treated equally and with dignity.
