The South African winter season has officially started, accompanied by heavy rains, strong winds and cold temperatures. With that, the safety of those travelling on the country’s public roads is among some of the top priorities.

This is due to the continuous winds that can push one’s vehicle into any given direction – not to forget the wet and slippery asphalt concrete that could lead to a catastrophic disaster if the correct road rules are not abided by.

This is why motorists must become vigilant and aware of their surroundings. Doing so will lessen the potential risk of you and fellow road users being involved in an accident and ultimately save lives.

To assist you in reaching your destination safely, here are a few safety precautions that could be useful for the next time that you find yourself on the road.

The Western Cape Government highlights that it is important that motorists perform the relevant inspections before winter. This will ensure that your vehicle is fully functional and able to operate effortlessly during the worst weather conditions.

According to the authority mentioned above, these are important checks to do:

  • Invest in a good wiper blade to ensure your windscreen is cleaned effectively.
  • Check that your tyres have adequate threads for better traction.
  • Make sure that your mirrors are in good condition.
  • Ensure that your headlights, brake lights, and indicators are all working.
  • Check that your mud flaps are secured.

After all of these checks have been attended to, these are important rules to follow while on the road according to tyre manufacturing company, Bridgestone Tyres:

Turn on headlights – This will ensure you have better sight of what lies ahead.

Reduce your speed – This is important, as it often takes slightly longer for your car to slow down when braking on a wet surface.

Maintain a good following distance – Bridegestone mentioned that because the car in front of you may stop at any given time, it is important to have a decent amount of distance between you. This will prevent unnecessary crashes.
