Toyota SA keeps the sales scoreboard ticking

Hilux remains SA’s favourite vehicle.

The Hilux has once again spearheaded Toyota SA Motors’ monthly sales for the month of July, helping TSAM retain the number one spot on the local sales chart. Registering a total of 3 021 units out of TSAM’s total of 11 131, the Hilux was also the main contributor in TSAM’s LCV segment.

On the Passenger front, it was the locally built Corolla Cross that led the charge with a total of 1 547 units. The compact quartet of the Vitz (864), Urban Cruiser (635), Starlet (1 222) and the newly launched Started Cross (590) amassed a total of 3 311 units. Also making great impact in Passenger sales was SA’s most popular SUV, the Fortuner, with 727 models sold.

The Land Cruiser brand continues its success with the new Prado accounting for 238 units on its second month, the Land Cruiser 300 posting 113 and the Land Cruiser 76 Station Wagon claiming 25.

On the luxury front, Lexus sold a total of 78 units – including 41 NX (a commendable spike for the top selling model), 17 LX and 13 RX models. It is worth noting that Lexus is at the forefront of Toyota’s New Energy Vehicles strategy, with all Lexus models – bar the LX examples - available in either Hybrid or Plug-in Hybrid or both.

Admirable figures were also registered in the Medium Commercial Vehicles segment with 161 units – 96 of which were Hino 300-Series models while the Toyota Coaster sold 43 models. In the Heavy Commercial Vehicles segment, Toyota registered at total of 79 Hino 500-Series models while a total of 41 Hino (25 of which were 700-Series while 16 were 500-Series) units were recorded in the Extra Heavy Commercial Vehicles segment.

Reflecting on the new vehicle sales statistics for the month of July 2024, naamsa | The Automotive Business Council says “… at 44 229 units, [the sales] reflected an increase of 657 units, or a gain of 1.5%, from the 43 572 vehicles sold in July 2023.” 

The Automotive Business Council adds that: “The July 2024 new passenger car market at 29 934 units had registered an increase of 1 894 cars, or a gain of 6.8%, compared to the 28 040 new cars sold in July 2023. Car rental sales accounted for a sound 17.1% of new passenger vehicles sales during the month.”

For the month of July, the Toyota Africa Parts Centre (TAPC) supplied just over 1.5million part pieces to the domestic market, with an additional 337 528 pieces going to the export market.
