Test Review: The B40 Plus from the BAIC SA stable. An erstwhile SUV!

BAIC SA hosted an exclusive media event, offering journalists a unique opportunity to experience the excitement of its latest model, the all-new B40 PLUS 8AT. We also had the opportunity to tour the massive factory in Gqeberha, where, currently, the Beijing X55 is assembled from start to finish. But back to the B40 Plus. The event showcased the vehicle's capabilities on and off road. The drive through the Addo National Park with it’s steep inclines and declines, twisty and winding roads, over boulders and deep dongas was an ideal test for the B40 PLUS which has its roots in the military and has over 60 years of heritage to draw on.  It has been tested in almost every condition, altitude, terrain, and application over this time leading to the claim that it was born in the battlefield and perfected in the real world.

Exterior

The styling on the B40 PLUS is bold. This SUV knows how to command attention wherever it goes and is made for drivers that don’t accept the norm.

The dynamic design is complemented by aggressive bumpers, wheel arches and stylish 17” alloy wheels. The bold 5-slot grille is unmistakable and seeks an audience wherever the B40 PLUS finds itself.

Go Topless!

The removable roof and panels mean that you can go topless when the mood strikes. The large windows and windscreen make for great visibility, whatever the landscape.

Interior

As amazing as the B40 PLUS is on the outside, the style continues inside this SUV. Far from functional, the style is simple and bold with a host of features to make you u feel as good on the inside as you look on the outside.

Dual zone air conditioner, adjustable seats, front and rear and 6-speaker entertainment system with AM/FM/MP5 functionality, Bluetooth and USB port means that you feel and look cool whet her you’re rocking the city streets or rock-climbing in the great outdoors.

Thrilling Test Drive Experience

The all-new B40 PLUS 8AT took centre stage, showcasing its power and performance on various 4x4 roads in Gqeberha. The adventure culminated in an exhilarating bush experience. I was impressed by the vehicle's handling, suspension, and overall performance, making it a true standout in its class.

The media event offered a rare glimpse into BAIC's vision and customer-centric approach, solidifying the company's position as a leader in the automotive industry. BAIC SA's dedication to customer satisfaction and after-sales support was also highlighted, demonstrating its commitment to building long-term relationships with its customers. 

Petrol or Diesel

Available in 2 litre Petrol Turbo or 2.0 Diesel Turbo, the choice is yours on how you power your adventure. The petrol engine kicks out 160kW @ 5500 r/min while the diesel pushes out 110kW @ 4000 r/min and 350Nm @ 1800 - 2800 r/min. The B40 PLUS is also packed with features that makes your drive, on-road or off-road an adventure.

The City Hunter and Champion models also include Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Traction Control System (TCS), Hill Ascent Control (HAC) and Hill Descent Control (HAC). A ground clearance of 210mm, approach angle of 37 degrees and departure angle of 31 degrees means that the B40 PLUS can take on any terrain with ease.
