GAC Emkoo Debuts in SA: All you need to know

Following hot on the heels of its debut model, the Emzoom, GAC Motor has now unveiled its second offerings to Mzansi: the Emkoo. It is a slightly larger SUV (than the Emzoom) and it’s first impression at the reveal at Melrose Arch, Johannesburg, is genuinely striking. The Emkoo, like the Emzoom, just demands to be looked at. The Emkoo boasts an even bolder exterior design, with striking V-shaped grille elements, triple-element headlights and a coupe silhouette. Bumper to bumper, it’s 4.68 metres long.

Glittering Event

The ‘reveal’ event saw a whole mix of attendees including media, dealers, social media influencers and other motoring industry affiliates to get to know all about GAC Motor and how the Salvador Caetano Group is handling its distribution. The presentation included some background for the GAC Motor group, which is the fifth largest automotive producer in China and currently holds China’s Brand Quality and Service Awards.

More importantly, by the close of 2024 the group plans to have 20 dealers established across the country with aspirations of doubling this number by the close of 2026. The Emkoo and recently tested Emzoom will be critical in this success, spearheading a market charge until other models from a comprehensive portfolio are market ready.

Powertrain

The powertrain has been carried over from its smaller Emkoo sibling, which means the 1.5-litre turbocharged motor delivers 130 kW and 270 N.m. This is mated to a 7-speed ‘wet’ dual-clutch transmission to the front wheels. Fuel consumption has been highlighted at a very impressive 6.4 L/100 km, considering that the Emkoo is a large SUV.

Safety

Like the Emzoom, this is well equipped with safety and tech features. Inside both Executive and Executive Plus derivatives include a 10.1-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a surround-view camera, a glass roof with a built in electric sunshade and a keyless start system. It is further equipped on the safety front with adaptive cruise control, integrated cruise assist, autonomous emergency braking, forward collision-warning, traffic sign recognition system, lane keep assist and lane departure warning to name a few.

Range Topper

The range topper has 19 inch wheels, while the interior receives a wireless charger and an electric tailgate. The self-park function is sure to be a winner for customers as well as the heads up display and heated and vented front seats. The Emkoo is slated to go on sale in September with the two variants as described above.
