Following the recent launch of the adventure-ready Ranger Wildtrak X, Ford is introducing even greater diversity and customer appeal to the Ranger line-up in South Africa with the launch of the all-new Ranger Tremor.
“The new Ranger raised the bar for comfort, practicality, performance and safety, and we are broadening both its appeal and capability even further with the addition of the Ranger Tremor,” says Doreen Mashinini, General Manager for Marketing at Ford South Africa. Tremor is aimed at customers who require enhanced capability and confidence in conquering challenging off-road conditions, as well as owners that typically customize their vehicle for overlanding adventures.
The Ranger Tremor Double Cab uses the same 154kW/500Nm 2.0L Bi-Turbo diesel engine and full-time four-wheel drive (4WD) system as the Wildtrak X, and benefits from the innovative Trail Turn Assist feature that allows the vehicle to manoeuvre around the tightest off-road turns with ease.
Style and Substance
In keeping with its adventurous character, the Ranger Tremor is visually distinguished from the XLT series through the addition of a black honeycomb off-road front grille that is equipped with the same LED auxiliary driving lights as the Wildtrak X, along with unique Bolder Grey exterior details for the lower sections of the front bumper and H-bar, fender vents, mirror caps, door handles, and rear bumper.
This is complemented by extended wheelarch mouldings in Bolder Grey that frame the purposeful 265/70 R17 all-terrain General Grabber AT3 tyres with white lettering, mounted on 17-inch Asphalt Black machine-faced alloy rims.

Adding a further touch of exclusivity, Ranger Tremor is available in Conquer Grey – a colour option which was previously limited to the Ranger Raptor. Additional choices include Agate Black, Carbonized Grey, Frozen White, Lucid Red, Blue Lightning and Iconic Silver which replaces Moondust Silver in the Ranger colour palette.
Tough, Durable and Practical
The Ranger Tremor is designed to conquer the toughest conditions, and this theme is carried through to the cabin which matches high-tech features with outstanding practicality and durability.
The seats are trimmed in water-resistant black vinyl with Medium Dark Urban Grey stitching. The front seats incorporate the Tremor logo embroidered in orange on the seatbacks, and provide six-way adjustment. In place of traditional carpets, vinyl flooring provides a practical touch that makes cleaning the interior a breeze, even after a muddy off-road adventure.
Precision Grey accents and Ebony upper trim finishes on the doors and dashboard ensure that the Ranger’s top-notch quality, luxury and refinement remain as appealing as ever, despite the Tremor’s rugged nature.
The standard fitment of the roof-mounted auxiliary switches allows seamless fitment of the powered accessories that are part and parcel of 4x4 overlanding. Provision is made for the fitment of a second battery in the engine bay with no modifications required – a feature that is common to all new Rangers.
As with the Wildtrak X, the Tremor is equipped with the Off-road SYNC Screen with the 360-degree camera system that makes manoeuvring in tight spaces in absolute cinch. This also means that the XLT’s 10.1-inch touchscreen display makes way for the larger 12-inch version which incorporates these great features. Wireless charging is standard, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Loading up the Tremor for an adventure is easy as the loadbox is equipped with the spray-in bedliner (with an integrated 12-volt socket) to prevent damaging the floor, along with the versatile Cargo Management System to safely secure any items being carried.
Off-road Capability
Along with the muscular appearance of the Tremor, there’s a lot going on under the skin to further enhance this unique Ranger’s ‘Built Ford Tough’ off-road capabilities.
It benefits from the same suspension upgrades as the Wildtrak X, including the specially developed Bilstein Position Sensitive Dampers that provide variable levels of damping force based on the prevailing driving conditions.
Combined with the capable all-terrain General Grabber AT3 tyres, this creates a wider track and increased ground clearance that off-road drivers will appreciate – whether negotiating a steep and rocky ascent, a deep mud track or soft desert sand.
Additionally, Ranger Tremor joins the Wildtrak X as the only 2.0-litre models (using the Bi-Turbo diesel with 154kW/500Nm) available with Ford’s full-time four-wheel drive system, which uses an electromagnetic transfer case (eMTC) mated to the 10-speed automatic transmission with advanced eShifter and electronic parking brake.
An extensive range of driver assistance systems provide enhanced confidence in any terrain, including the new Trail Turn Assist feature that debuted on the Wildtrak X. The system brakes the inside wheel when negotiating tight bends in off-road conditions below 19km/h, reducing the vehicle’s turning radius by up to 25 percent to help navigate around obstacles.
This is complemented by the usual gamut of driver assist and active safety features common to the Ranger line-up, such as Hill Descent Control, Hill Launch Assist, Dynamic Stability Control (which includes Load Adaptive Control, Roll Over Mitigation, Traction Control and Trailer Sway Control). It also boasts the Lane Keeping System with Road Edge Detection, Pre-Collision Assist (with Dynamic Brake Support, Forward Collision Warning System and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection), Reverse Brake Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring with Trailer Coverage, and parking sensors front and rear.
Pricing will be announced closer to the launch of the vehicle. Ford Protect will be included as standard, comprising of a four-year or 120 000km warranty, four-year or unlimited distance Roadside Assistance and five-year or unlimited distance corrosion warranty. The recommended service interval is 15 000km or annually, whichever occurs first.
