Zimbabwean national arrested for EC CIT

File

A 32-year-old Zimbabwean national is due to appear in court in Mthatha on Monday following his arrest for a cash-in-transit robbery in the CBD.

The Hawks said three men robbed security officers who had been loading money into an ATM on Elliot Street on Friday.

Spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana said the suspects, posing as shoppers, accosted the security officers and at gunpoint forced them to lie on the ground and disarmed them.

“An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen during the incident. One security guard sustained head injuries and was transported to hospital for medical treatment,” Mhlakuvana said.

He said law enforcement authorities were alerted and swiftly responded.

“Upon arrival, they observed the suspects fleeing in a grey Ford Everest in the direction of Circus Triangle Mall, leaving behind one suspect who attempted to flee on foot.

“A pursuit ensued, and the suspect was apprehended on Eagle Street, Mthatha.

“He was found in possession of two 9mm pistols, an Astra and a Vektor, with defaced serial numbers, along with live ammunition," Mhlakuvana said.

He said initial investigations have linked the suspect to a previous CIT robbery within the province.

The investigation remains ongoing, and Mhlakuvana said additional arrests are expected.
