WSU confirms death of student from Butterworth campus

File

A Walter Sisulu University student has died after reportedly jumping from a moving vehicle which resulted in head injuries.

In a statement on Tuesday, WSU said the student was taken to hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

WSU spokesperson, Yonela Tukwayo, said the circumstances surrounding the “tragic incident” are currently under investigation by the police.

She said the university also urged “calm and patience” while the investigation continues.

“It is essential that we allow the proper investigative processes to take place.

“At WSU, the safety and well-being of our students remain our utmost priority.

“We will continue to work closely with law enforcement and relevant authorities to ensure that all necessary measures are taken,” Tukwayo said.

She said WSU management would be offering counselling services and support services to all students affected by this loss.

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased student during this incredibly difficult time.

“We extend our deepest condolences and stand ready to support them in any way we can,” she added.

The name of the student has not yet been released and no further details were provided.

However, there are unconfirmed social media posts circulating alleging that the student had been assaulted by campus security.

Police have been approached for comment.
