Walter Sisulu University in East London has officially launched its new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics centre.
The Centre was launched on Tuesday in partnership with various organisations, including STEMpower and the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa - Nemisa.
Nemisa CEO Trevor Rammitlwa says the Centre will reach beyond the walls of the university in an attempt to bridge the digital divide in rural areas by affording these communities an opportunity to register for available training programmes.
WSU Spokesperson Yonela Tukwayo said the university was also introducing STEM careers to high schools in Mdantsane and Duncan Village, thus affording them an opportunity to attend practical sessions at the university.
"People who take hold of this opportunity will have access to over 1000 certified microsoft courses and programmes varying from introduction to computers all the way to 3D printing," she said.
WSU Vice Chancellor & Principal Rusheilla Songca said their main hope was that people gain sustainable value from the centre.
She added that this opportunity will make the transition from high school to university as smooth as possible for the underprivileged.
