An attempt to smuggle contraband into the St. Albans Correctional Centre in Gqeberha has landed a local woman in hot water.
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has confirmed that the woman was apprehended at the prison on Saturday.
DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said the incident took place at around 10:30 during routine searches conducted by officials.
According to Nxumalo, the items confiscated were dagga, a mobile phone charger, and earphones.
"The incident was registered with the SAPS for a criminal case to be opened, following Section 119 of the Correctional Services Act," he said.
It is understood that the woman in question was acting on the instruction of her son, who is said to be serving a 20-year sentence in prison, and that unauthorised medication also formed part of the items seized.
