Woman accused of torching passenger bus to remain behind bars

The case against the woman accused of setting a passenger coach alight in Gqeberha has been remanded to the 30th of April for a damage and fire report to be presented to the court.

Twenty-four-year-old Yamkela Mahobe appeared briefly in the city's magistrates court on Tuesday on a charge of malicious damage to property for the fire that engulfed an Eagle Liner bus in November last year.

Mahobe allegedly had a dispute with the bus company over a cell phone before threatening to burn down the bus.

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu previously said the damage to the bus is estimated at R3,2 million.

Mabobe was arrested at her mother's house in Willowvale two weeks after the incident.

She remains in custody.
