Woman accused of husband's murder considered a flight risk

Ethel Noqekwa and her attorney, Advocate Bongo Mvinjelwa

The Gqeberha woman who allegedly hatched an elaborate plan to kill her ex-husband, will have to wait a while longer to hear if she will be released on bail.

Ethel Noqekwa and two others are accused of the murder of her ex-husband, Dr Bantu Noqekwa at his surgery in Zwide, in May.

She is said to have been arranging the murder via a middleman since 2021, who has since turned state witness.

During cross-examination of the investigating officer on Thursday, defence attorney Bongo Mvinjelwa put it to the witness that Ethel Noqekwa had been assaulted into making a confession.

Sergeant Sibulelo Yali denied the allegation.

Yali said he believed that she was a flight risk, as she left for Cape Town without informing anyone of her whereabouts shortly before her arrest.

Upon further questioning by the defence, Yali reiterated that he had evidence that linked the couple's eldest son to the murder plot.

He said the accused, and her eldest son had discussed the murder and were in agreement that his father must be killed.

The court also heard that the hitmen had received a partial payment of R6 000 in order to visit a traditional healer to "cleanse themselves" of the doctor's blood.

The bounty that was placed on Bantu Noqekwa's head was R500 000.

The case was remanded to 11 July at the New Brighton Magistrates Court.
