WMACA welcomes action against St Andrews College staffer

St Andrews College

The organisation, Women and Men Against Child Abuse, has welcomed the action taken by St Andrews College in Makhanda in suspending a staff member arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a seven-year-old boy.

WMACA said the alleged perpetrator was also suspended by the private school, as he has access to children at the school.

Spokesperson, Miranda Jordan, said they're calling on St Andrews to "do everything in its power to protect the children in their care."

She says the "WMACA trust that the school has learned from the dereliction of their duty of care, as was widely publicised, with the tragic suicide of a learner and resultant current organised crime investigation against a former water polo coach for alleged sexual abuse of a learner at the school."

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, said a 49-year-old man made a brief court appearance in Makhanda on Monday on charges of rape.

He said the suspect was remanded in custody and will apply for bail next Monday.

Nkohli said the "man was arrested on Sunday, 30 July 2023, for his alleged involvement in raping a seven-year-old boy last year (2022)."

He said the circumstances surrounding the incident form part of the ongoing investigation.
