Witness in Bethelsdorp murder case testifies in court

A woman who witnessed her boyfriend being gunned down in Bethelsdorp in 2020 has relayed her version of events to the Gqeberha High Court.

The woman, who cannot be named for safety reasons, is testifying via CCTV cameras against the murder accused, Whaldred Cona.

The State alleges that Cona killed Basil Prince on 1 October 2020 in Mistletoe Street, shortly after Prince was discharged from a hospital with gunshot wounds.

Cona's co-accused, Jason Julius, has since died. The deceased and the witness are brother and sister.

According to the charge sheet, Cona confronted Prince over a firearm. They exchanged words.

Cona allegedly returned a short while later in the company of Julius.

After debating who would shoot Julius, Cona allegedly decided to do it because Julius's sister (the witness) was present.

Prince was shot in full view of the witness while seated on the couch.

On Tuesday, the witness was under cross-examination by Defence Attorney Peet Cilliers.

The trial continues.
