Western Cape police seized a large consignment of Mandrax tablets they say has a street value of around R7 million.
Sergeant Chris Spies said the big bust was made on Wednesday at a vehicle checkpoint at Laingsburg on the N1.
He said police members pulled over a delivery truck and on approaching the vehicle, noticed that the driver was acting suspiciously.
Spies said they commenced a search of the sealed boxes in the cabin and found 145,000 Mandrax tablets.
He said the 44-year-old driver was arrested and charged with dealing in drugs and is due to appear in court on Tuesday.
Western Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major-General Preston Voskuil, welcomed the arrest and seizure.
“The deployment of resources along entry and exit routes is in line with the policing priorities to curb the influx of illicit drugs, unlicensed firearms and illegal goods into the province.
“This deployment will be maintained for the rest of the holiday period and beyond", he said.
