The Independent Police Investigative Directorate will probe the fatal shooting of a man wanted by police for various crimes in Nelson Mandela Bay.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, says the incident took place in the Walmer area on Thursday afternoon when members of the National Intervention Unit were busy with crime prevention duties.
She said the members spotted a white VW Polo driven by the 23-year-old suspect near Walmer Links and tried to stop and search him.
Mawisa said the suspect got out of the car and pointed a firearm at the members, who opened fire.
She said an unlicensed 9mm pistol was found in his possession.
An inquest docket and pointing of firearm was opened for investigation while IPID has taken over the case for further investigation.
