Police used teargas and stun grenades this morning to control the protest and at least one suspect was arrested on public violence charges. A crowd of some 500 people later gathered at Walmer Police Station demanding the release of the 36 year-old man. Police say the suspect will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates Court later today.
Two private vehicles were damaged by stown-throwing protesters and one woman had to be taken to hospital after a brick was thrown through her windscreen.
Public Order Police, Tactical Response Teams and local police members have been deployed to bring the situation under control.
Police maintain a strong police presence in the area. A number of businesses in the vicinity of the Walmer Police Station have closed their doors because of the protests. Sixth avenue shopping centre and business around the centre have also closed as a safety precaution.
Algoa FM news also received reports of shots being fired.
