A request has been made to the Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay and the Directorate of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, to change the name of Kobus Road in the Northern Areas to honour slain cop Callan Andrews.
The call was made by the leader of the opposition, Rano Kayser, who said Andrews' death was not only a reminder and reflection of the crime in our city, but also reflects the negligence of our government departments.
He said Constable Andrews was shot and killed when his assigned vehicle malfunctioned and he had to push his vehicle physically. This tragedy could have been avoided if SAPS had regularly checked their vehicles.
He called on the Mayor to prioritize the name change as a matter of urgency.
Earlier this week, two of the three alleged killers of Andrews, Damian Brookes and Chadwin Visagie, made a brief appearance in the Gqeberha Magistrates Court.
The third suspect is underage and appeared at Nerina House last month.
Constable Andrews, 29, had been serving in the police force for only two months when he was gunned down in Helenvale on New Year's Eve..
