Undocumented foreign nationals arrested in EC compliance blitz

Employment and Labour Minister, Nomakosazana Meth during one of the compliance inspections this week.

Seven foreign nationals and their employers were arrested during a “high impact” inspection blitz in parts of the Eastern Cape.

The Minister of Employment and Labour, Nomakhosazana Meth, and the Acting Director General, Viwe Mlenzana, conducted the inspections in Nelson Mandela Bay and the Kouga Municipality this week.

In a statement, the Department said the three-day programme was preceded by “build-up activities”, with compliance inspections focussing on several sectors, including agriculture and forestry, construction, funeral homes, as well the wholesale, retail, and hospitality sectors.

Labour inspectors carried out a total of 346 compliance inspections together with the Department of Home Affairs.

“Out of the 346 inspections undertaken, 231 were found to be compliant, while 50 contravention notices and 56 compliant orders, and two prohibition notices were issued.

“Seven undocumented foreign nationals were arrested together with their employer, by law enforcement agencies,” the Department said.

Meanwhile, Minister Meth hosted a business dinner on Thursday where she was able to share the department’s key priorities.

“Taking services to the people is our top priority. It is the start of the great work that we will do for the next five years.

“We will work in partnership with the private and public sector, as well as the relevant sister departments to inform and empower, inspect and enforce our laws.

“Through our operation Yazini, we will ensure that there is adequate education about our services and skills development," Minister Meth said.
