Two suspects were shot dead on Monday following a shootout with police on the N2 outside Tsolo.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa says members attached to the Tactical Response Team (TRT) pounced on the suspects, who were allegedly on their way to commit a cash-in-transit heist in the area.
She says the suspects are believed to have been involved in CIT robberies in KwaZulu Natal and the Eastern Cape and were driving towards Mthatha on Monday in a Polo Vivo.
TRT members intercepted the vehicle, and upon stopping, the suspects started to shoot at police, who retaliated.
Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa says both suspects were killed on the scene.
She says police recovered a revolver and a pistol in their possession.
Cases of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition were opened for investigation against the deceased, as per protocol.
At the same time, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) will investigate the case in an Inquest.
